Tips)   Barking

Most people want their dog to bark to warn of strange people in the yard or coming to the door. Problems occur when the barking gets out of hand and the dog does not quiet down when told. There is another kind of barking, which can be the cause of strife among neighbors. This is when the dog is left for long periods alone and the barking goes on all day or night. To correct barking, you have to decide which kind of barking it is: Whether the dog is barking because it is lonely, or barking because it excited, or barking because it hears something it is not sure about. Once again, shouting at the dog to stop barking will not stop him. In fact it would be inclined to make him bark all the more because, just as one dog barking will set off the other dogs barking, your shout will be interpreted as a bark...and the dog will bark back at you.

Tips    Not Housebroken

A dog that is over three months of age and is still going in the house for "wee" and "poo" is considered not to be housebroken. Under three months of age, the occasional accident will occur, especially when the dog gets excited, or is left for long periods without access to outside. This is not a difficult thing for a dog to learn, but some people have the idea that the way to teach a dog to be clean int he house is to rub his nose in the mess. This does nothing more than confuse the dog, and will tend to hide when he needs to go to the bathroom. Consequently, you will find "deposits" in the most unlikely places, where often the only clue is the smell. Housebreaking should not take longer than a week, and under most circumstances, only two days. The exception is a very young puppy (eight to ten weeks), when things can take a little longer.
