Tips   Jumping Up

Most dogs like to jump up on visitors and children when they are running and playing. Large dogs can knock a person down, and even small dogs can annoy by putting dirty paws on clothes or ripping stockings. Dogs jump up because this is the way they greet each other as puppies. When they get older, they sniff each other first before play. They are paying you the compliment of being happy to see you and inviting you to touch them. Pushing dogs down only reinforces the jumping up as they get a pat (as push is as good as a pat!). And the traditional method of putting a knee in their chest can be awfully difficult to administer to either a small dog or one that is bouncing around like a mad thing. Don't touch them until they're sitting.Tips

Come When Called

Quite often, you can see dog owners calling and calling their dogs with no effect, and even when they go and try and catch the dog, they end up chasing it all over the place. Getting a dog to come first time, every time, should be a priority with owners, as it can save the dog's life near a busy road. The reason dogs don't come when called are the fact that they don't see a reason to come, and what they are doing at the time is a lot more interesting than their owners. Also, quite often when they are called they will be taken away from the park where they are enjoying themselves. A dog that doesn't come when called has no respect for its owner, and although it may sometimes obey other commands, it will only do them if there is a benefit (treats, etc.).
